ABSTRACT
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a multifactorial disease affecting multiple organ systems. It is characterized by the resistance of cells to insulin thereby causing hyperglycemia. It is associated with microvascular and macrovascular complications which in the long run can lead to morbidity and mortality. Lifestyle modifications and monotherapy with oral hypoglycemic agents are generally considered as a first-line intervention for glycemic control.
